In July 2019 the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (MAAETC) was re-funded for the next five years with an award of $14.2 million. The MAAETC is led by Linda Rose Frank, PhD, MSN, ACRN, FAAN as principal investigator and professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. The MidAtlantic AETC region includes the states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia with nine regional partner sites working to provide HIV/AIDS related training, consultation, and technical assistance to healthcare providers. The MAAETC is one of eight AETCs funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services HIV/AIDS Bureau. Beginning in 1988, the mission of the AETCs remains the same – to assure that health professionals are prepared to provide high quality HIV diagnosis, prevention and treatment – though the training modalities employed have changed over time to include distance learning opportunities such as the MAAETC “Webinar Wednesday” series.
Housed at the Health Federation of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Regional Partner of the MidAtlantic AETC provides training and technical assistance to Eastern Pennsylvania and the greater Philadelphia region. Founded by Ann Ricksecker and currently led by Debra D’Alessandro, MPH as the regional coordinator and Susan Thompson as the training director, and supported by a team that includes Bill Rusk, Kristin Walker, Tiania Warner, Eleanor DeShields and Lane Taylor, the Philadelphia Regional Partner develops training to support the delivery of quality HIV care and treatment for persons living with HIV and those at risk. The AETCs also provide training on other sexually transmitted infections, medical case management, Hepatitis C, substance use, and other comorbidities and related issues.
